Early modern trade flows between smaller states : the Portuguese-Swedish trade in the eighteenth century as an example

The eighteenth century was a period of many great power wars and competition for colonies. However, despite the turmoil, smaller nations were able to carve their niches in the international trade of the period. Examination of new sources, used in a comparative fashion, indicates that bilateral trade still has much to offer for the analysis of international trade history. The pattern of bilateral trade between Sweden and Portugal indicates that they were not equally dependent on that trade, and that the products traded varied over time. Il volume esamina, per la prima volta, i simulacri lignei del Settecento custoditi nelle chiese, nei Musei Diocesani e nelle collezioni private dell’Isola. Sono opere che, a grandezza naturale e di forte impatto emotivo, furono commissionate da prelati, confraternite, devoti e nobili. L’articolo, utilizzando documenti editi e inediti, indaga la produzione di Marco Li Puma e Gregorio Balsano, argentieri attivi in Sicilia nella seconda metà del Settecento. Il primo è attestato a Petralia Sottana, dove realizza diverse opere tra cui l’inedito servizio di cartagloria in argento del 1758 commissionatogli da don Gaetano Carapezza, procuratore dell’altare delle Anime del Purgatorio della Chiesa Madre, e a Petralia Soprana, centro in cui si trova l’unica opera firmata, la cassettina per elemosina custodita nel Tesoro della Matrice. Oggetto del contributo sono l'Immacolata Concezione e il San Michele Arcangelo custoditi rispettivamente nella Cattedrale di Piazza Armerina e nella Chiesa Madre di Cerami, centri dell'entroterra siciliano. La prima opera è ricondotta per la prima volta ad ignoto scultore napoletano del primo quarto del Settecento, la seconda, invece, è attribuita a Filippo Quattrocchi. British writers in the eighteenth century spent much time reflecting on the notion of normality, as the rising middle ranks promoted their ideology as a class, while defending the right of the individuals to their own personal choices. The period was also marked by scientific advances, and for this reason, it is not surprising that the term 'eccentric', originally restricted to astronomy, started to be used widely to refer to unconventional human behaviour.
